part which the University should play in South China,
but the present is hardly an opportune moment for
consideration of such a question and I think this
matter may be left over for the time being.
I presume that this despatch and enclosures
will be referred to the A.C.E.C. in due course but I
suggest that we should send an interim reply saying
that the S. of S. proposes to refer the matter in
due course to the Advisory Committee and that in the
meantime he does not propose to comment on the
resolutions of the Court. He is, however, glad to
note the large measure of agreement which has been
obtained and he considers that this reflects great

conduct of the University business have been referred
to a Committee for further consideration and for the
preparation of such draft amendments to the University
Ordinance as may be found necessary. Finally he
agrees with the Governor's view that the conclusions
now reported render an academic commission to study
the problems unnecessary at the present time.
